What We Welcome Into Our Homes

LETTERS TO THE FAITHFUL · FAITH & FAMILY

A home is shaped not only by what happens inside it, but by what we repeatedly invite into it.

Dear friends,

Most decisions about entertainment do not feel especially significant. A film plays in the evening. Music fills a quiet room. A phone supplies a few minutes of distraction. Yet these ordinary choices become the atmosphere of daily life. They deserve the same thoughtful attention we give to other things that shape our families.

Begin with What You Value

Before asking what should be kept out, ask what you hope to cultivate. Is your home a place of patience, honesty, prayer, curiosity, and care for others? Which habits support those qualities? Which leave you distracted, restless, or less attentive to the people beside you?

These questions do not require every household to make identical choices. They require us to make our own choices deliberately. A familiar habit should not be beyond examination simply because it is familiar.

Make Room for Conversation

When a film or song concerns you, explain why. Name the theme or message that troubles you rather than assuming everyone will recognize it in the same way. Ask others what they noticed. A conversation can reveal a difference in interpretation, a question that needs answering, or a boundary that should be clearer.

Parents can set limits while remaining willing to listen. Young people should be able to ask why a decision has been made without being treated as though the question itself is disobedience.

Choose Something Worth Welcoming

Discernment is also an invitation. Make space for shared meals, reading, music, service, and stories that encourage the virtues you wish to practice. A household defined only by prohibitions can forget to articulate what it loves.

Choose one ordinary habit to discuss this week. Consider whether it serves your family well, and agree on a practical next step. Begin with attention rather than alarm.

In faith and fellowship,
The Covenant of Archangels
